ST-Perf - Performance-Measuring-Tool für Networker Version 2

Diese Information ist auch in Deutsch erhältich.

Several years ago we set about answering the question:

"How can I determine the data transfer rate of the nightly backup?"

As a result we introduced a tool with the name "Performance-Measuring-Tool for Networker".

Its success has proved us right: this is a tool that fulfils a need.
However this first version had a few limitations which hampered the exact analysis of the data transfer rates.
For example, it was not able to show more than one device at a time in the GUI.

We are now pleased to announce our new tool "ST-Perf".

With this new version of ST-Perf you are now able to look at all servers and devices at the same time and make a detailed analysis of your nightly backup.

Key Features:

  • unlimited number of devices
  • unlimited number of servers
  • SRS-support (DDS following)
(allocation physical device / logical device)
  • tape action, number of sessions, NetWorker messages can be shown on demand
  • configuration of colours and fonts
  • interaktiv configuration in terminal or via GUI
  • definition of start time, duration and polling interval

Your benefit:

  • Identification of unused resourcs
  • Increase the utilisation ratio of your expensive devices
  • Better and easier planning and scheduling your backups
  • See insufficient utilisation ratio of your devices
(devices can be physically damaged if the load is too low)
  • Find bottlenecks in your configuration
  • By optimising your backup, you can save on expensive hardware
  • Backups of file systems performing less well are clearly revealed and can be relocated onto file devices and then staged

The tool consists of three parts:

  1. Configuration module
    For defining
    • the polling rate for receiving data from the servers.
    • which devices are to be recorded
    • how long the recording is to last.
  2. Recording module
This module records and saves all needed data from the servers when started with 'at' or 'cron'.
  3. Analysis module
A Python TK application creates and shows a graph of the recorded data.
The display is zoomable. Multiple graphs can be displayed in one window.
